Best Fly Fishing Movies

Fly Fishing Movies

I thought it would be cool to make a list of the best fly fishing movies. Obviously, I would rather be on the water myself, but these films are great entertainment especially in the winter months! To build a little anticipation I made the list from lowest to highest ranked, according to IMDb. It is not a very big list as there haven’t been too many fly fishing movies made, yet!

Great fishing movies.

The River Why

The River Why

IMDb 5.6/10

Rotten Tomatoes 36%

Drama, Romance – Feature Film

A young man leaves his entire family for a solitary life of fly fishing. His goal was to find his own way in the fishing world and thereby find himself and love. He stumbles across multiple difficulties that make him re-think if his choices were right or not.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

IMDb 6.8/10

Rotten Tomatoes 64%

Comedy, Drama, Romance – Feature Film

A fisheries expert is approached by a consultant to help realize a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of fly fishing to the desert and embarks on an upstream journey of fish and faith to prove the impossible possible. Please keep in mind, there is not a salmon fishing industry in Yemen. This is just a movie.

A River Runs Through It

A River Runs Through It

IMDb 7.2/10

Rotten Tomatoes 80%

Drama – Feature Film

Set around the city of Missoula in western Montana, the movie follows two sons of a Presbyterian minister—one that follows the rules and one that doesn’t—as they grow up and become adults in the Rocky Mountain region during a span of time from roughly World War I (1917–18) to the early days of the Great Depression (1929–41), including part of the Prohibition era (1919–33).

Until Hollywood starts making more fly fishing movies, we will have to rewatch these ones. Then again, one of the best parts of fly fishing is that it is a niche sport. The rivers are not packed with anglers, which makes being in the quiet nature so enjoyable. If everyone starts talking about fly fishing the same way people talk about bitcoin, we’re all doomed...

Other Great Fishing Movies

I do enjoy watching all types of fishing movies, so I added a few great fishing films below that you can check out.

The Perfect Storm

The Perfect Storm

IMDb 6.4/10

Rotten Tomatoes 64%

Action, Adventure, Drama – Feature Film

Hold onto your seat, I think the ocean is more intense than the fishing in this movie, but both will give you a run for your money. A commercial fishing vessel gets caught in one hell of a storm due to the crew wanting to go big instead of going home. I think I have seen this movie at least 5 times.

Big Fish

Big Fish

IMDb 8.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes 89%

Drama – Feature Film

A frustrated son tries to determine the fact from fiction in his dying father's life. The movie isn’t too big on fishing, but there is a scene with a catfish as big as a shark! The exaggeration in the movie is like every fishing story grandpa has ever told.

Grumpy Old Men

Grumpy Old Men

IMDb 7.0/10

Rotten Tomatoes 74%

Comedy, Romance – Feature Film

The lifelong feud between two neighbors gets worse when a beautiful woman moves in next door. It is a race to see who can woo her first! Clean humor and funny fishing scenes make this a solid classic.

Grumpier Old Men

Grumpier Old Men

IMDb 6.7/10

Rotten Tomatoes 62%

Comedy, Romance – Feature Film

John and Max, the two neighbors are at it again in the sequel to Grumpy Old Men. A new woman is in town and the boys must do some growing up. The laughs won’t stop as these two never stop arguing.
