The Black Gnat fly pattern dates back a few hundred years, making it a time-tested fly that every fly fishing angler has in their fly box. The simplicity and blackness of this hook makes it perfect for imitating thousands of different natural flies out on the water.
Black Gnats are often smaller meals for fish which is why Zinger Fishing sells mid-size to smaller hooks. When other larger hatches are happening, I would advise against using this fly pattern as it won’t be as delicious looking as a large fly will be. When no hatches are happening or you see droves of black flies around the water, this is the perfect time to use this pattern. Black flies are always out and about, making this fly pattern work extremely well.
Fish the Black Gnat like other dry fly patterns. Back eddies and slower currents are perfect for monster trout strikes.
