The Extended Body Green Drake fly pattern is famous for catching mountains of fish! The craftsmanship that goes into making these flies look natural is nothing short of breathtaking.
The drakes are the most common types of mayflies, and they are native to the United States and Canada. If a green or grey drake hatch is on, you don’t want to miss it! You also don’t want to be at the water when these hatches are happening without the right patterns to match them. We hiked into a small hidden mountain lake and my brother had 12 of the grey drakes which he was kind enough to let us all use for the day. Everyone couldn’t keep the fish off their hooks!
Fishing with these long-tailed drake patterns is similar to fishing with dry flies and emerger patterns. You will want to keep a little tension on that fly line and pull up fast and hard when you see it sink, setting the hook just right. Sizes #14 and #16 are perfect for imitating the naturals.
