The Blue Quill Dry Fly is best fished as an imitator to an early season mayfly. The Paraleptophlebia comes off after the water temperature rises above 50 degrees and stays there for a few days. This is generally the first mayfly hatch of the season, followed by the Quill Gordons and then the Hendricksons. These small dry fly fishing flies are fished with light tippets. The Blue Quill offers you the first action of late winter and early spring for trout.
I just added 3 more of these Blue Quills into my fly case, as I'm heading out to do some rainbow trout fly fishing tomorrow morning. If you are fly fishing for trout, you can't go wrong with having a few Blue Quills in the ol fly case.
